They say if you really, really want something, you should work hard at it and focus all your energy into achieving those goals and dreams. Miss Philippines Catriona Gray is no different. She was crowned Miss Universe today and she deserves to win that title. Not only is she beautiful but also smart and witty with a heart of gold.
Social Media Buzz
It’s not every day that you win the Miss Universe title. Catriona is the 4th Miss Universe titleholder from the Philippines and she’s every bit the beauty queen. In an Instagram post shared on Sunday, she writes, “What an amazing journey this has been – from day one back in January 2018 of announcing candidacy @bbpilipinasofficial to today. Philippines, you have endlessly inspired me, given me strength and support. I want nothing more than to bring pride to you and give my all to give the best Christmas gift ever to my country.”
She walks like a beauty queen – so graceful and elegant. There’s even a meme circulating on social media about her slow-mo turns, which got people buzzing, including Supermodel Tyra Banks.
Filipina Beauty and Brains
She’s got both beauty and brains too as she answers the questions without batting an eyelash. She thinks on her feet and she doesn’t mince words. She goes directly to the point… with a 1-2 punch.
Early in the competition, Catriona’s reply to the question about the legalization of marijuana is diplomatic, at best. She says, “I’m for it being used in a medical use but not so for recreational use, because I think if people were to argue what about alcohol and cigarettes, well everything is good but in moderation.”
The Winning Answer
For the Final Q&A, host Steve Harvey asked the three finalists this question: “What is the most important lesson you’ve learned in your life, and how would you apply it to your time as Miss Universe?”
Gray answered: “I work a lot in the slums of Tondo, Manila and the life there is very poor, sad and I’ve always taught myself to look for the beauty in it, to look in the beauty of the children and be grateful.”
“I would bring this aspect as a Miss Universe to see situations with a silver lining and to assess where I could give something, where I could provide something as a spokesperson.”
“If I could teach people to be grateful, we could have an amazing world where negativity could not grow and foster and children would have smiles on their faces.”
Here, Catriona shows that her heart and her mind are in the right place as she brilliantly answers the question by sharing her personal experience, which obviously captured the hearts of both judges and audience alike.
What We Can Learn From This
As freelancers, what can we learn from this win? One thing is having to give our 100% even if no one is watching. The viral video of her “slow-mo twirl” is intentional. She wouldn’t have pulled it off without practice. And this practice turned this one moment into a key social media buzz.
You will never know your best career breaks. So better act as if it was it today.
Truly, Catriona is a great representative of our country – the Philippines – as she shows the world a glimpse of what Filipinos and Filipinas are truly like. In an interview by Rappler:
"I'm really going to give my best. And I just pray that the judges will really get a sense of who I am. Because we are on stage and I believe there's an aspect of luck is there. If it's your time, it's your time. It's someone's fate, someone's destiny," she said.
"If it happens to be mine, I just pray that I'll be able to show the universe who Catriona is. And also show them what the Philippines is, who we are.”
We value compassion and wear our hearts on our sleeves. Indeed, Pinoys are not just dreamers but also hard workers. Congratulations, Catriona! Truly, you deserve that Miss Universe crown!
